Yes, your life would be easier if your boss and colleagues gave you a daily boost. But who said life was easy? Bosses and colleagues, like all of us, have strengths and weaknesses. So, appreciate the good points in others and then work on strengthening your own.
To get ahead you need to be one of the ‘Best’ not one of the rest. If you are serious about getting ahead, here are some of the ways you can use positive behaviors to increase your own motivation, morale, and success.
1. Believe in yourself.
Prepare, Equip and Go after what you need. Set up your own personal development plan and really follow it. Too many people get ‘OBE’ (Overtaken By Events) and fail to keep their skills current) and fail to keep their skills current.
Reading books that help you develop core skills, for example, how to set goals, how to communicate, how to provide constructive feedback to others, and how to negotiate. Two of my favorite books to motive and inspire you. They are, Awaken the Giant within, (Anthony Robbins), and Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and it’s all small stuff, (Richard Carlson); and Getting to Yes, (Roger Fisher and William Ury) on negotiation.
3. Take courses on undressing stress, communication, assertiveness, and interpersonal skills.
All of these skills are important and learning any of them will help your self-motivation. Join ‘Toastmasters’. It is a great way to develop speaking skills. Many people are terrified by the thought of having to speak in front of a group, and yet this is an important skills for a person who wants to lead others.
4. Give encouragement and recognition to coworkers.
If you do this is in a sincere manner, you will discover that boosting a coworker’s morale and motivation will rebound to help you too. Encouragement improves the atmosphere in your workplace and promotes respect.
Offer your services to a volunteer organization. Choose an area that interests and excites you, something you feel passionate about. If you can effectively work on a committee in a nonprofit organization, and work well there, you will certainly build your skills. The more people you are exposed to, the more skills you will gain, and also more good role models you can emulate. The role models become benchmarks for yourself.
SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE AVOID CERTAIN BEHAVIORS
Just as there are behaviors that motivate us to do our best, there are other behaviors that erode morale and diminish motivation. Your key to success is to avoid these behaviors:
